Project Description

In 2002 the university commissioned Zimmer Gunsul Frasca Partnership (Portland) to prepare a conceptual study of a proposed expansion of the College of Education.  The study recommended an addition of 94,174 gross sq. ft. of new space and renovation of 17,200 gsf of existing space to remedy current, serious space and functional problems and provide a modest increment for growth,

The 2005 legislature and 2008 emergency board authorized a spending limitation of $52,800,000 for the expansion project, designed by Thomas Hacker Architects of Portland.  The project consisted of approximately 70,120 gross square feet of new construction including new courtyards and other landscaping improvements associated with the new construction; renovations to approximately 42,000 gsf  of the existing Education buildings totaling approximately $4.5 million; renovations to approximately 3,000 gsf in the Clinical Services Building totaling approximately $1 million; structured underground parking (an additional 48,000 gsf) for approximately 200 vehicles, and surface parking for an additional 175 vehicles; campus site improvements totaling $1.1 million (including surface parking); and site utilities improvements totaling $800,000. The renovated Education building and Education Addition building were renamed "Lorry I. Lokey Education Building".

Site demolition and preparation began in fall 2007.  Construction began in winter 2008; temporary occupancy was obtained 3/20/09.  Contractor:  Lease Crutcher Lewis, Portland.
