What is Aikido?

O-Sensei

Morihei Ueshiba O-Sensei

Aikido is a martial art founded by Morihei Ueshiba O-Sensei. It is characterised by its flowing movement and use of an attacker's momentum against him, usually as a projecting throw, or as an arm or wrist lock. Aikido has it's historical basis in jujitsu, sword, spear and staff styles. O-Sensei wanted his art to be more than just a martial practice however, he wanted to create an art that at it's core had the tenet of loving protection for all things. This is what distinguishes Aikido from many other martial arts. In Aikido practice, we do not train with an opponent who we will defeat, we train with a partner who is helping us with our practice.
