ASTR 123, Assignment #6
Large Scale Structure and Galaxies
Assigned Nov 10, 2009----Due Nov 17
Answer the questions and return images from the Web. Place all images in a word
processor and include under each picture a brief description of the image.
Questions
1. In a galactic collision explain why the number of star collisions is small. Be specific and include the distances between galaxies and stars and the sizes of galaxies and stars (ref Notes).
2. On page 697 under the Redshift Survey you will find a discussion of how decidedly nonrandom the galaxies are distributed. Briefly describe how the are distributed. Make sure you include the size of voids and the Great Walls and the role of bubbles.

3.
Return an image of the Cartwheel Galaxy. Include a description. Include a
description of the rim the and effects of the compression wave.

4. Return
an x-ray image of the multi-million degree hot intracluster gas, which glows in
high energy x-rays. Explain how the hot gas determines the amount of dark
matter in the cluster

5. Return
the diagram of the Great Wall with a description of the diagram and the wall.

6. The
organization of structure appears up to the scale of superclusters, and voids.
There doesnŐt appear to be any larger structures. Return
an image of the superclusters within 500 million light-years. Include a
brief description and circle the Virgo supercluster.

According
to your book what is the approximate size and number of galaxies in the Virgo
supercluster. Which supercluster does our local cluster belong?
