Assorted Class Work

Contemporary media practice involves a rigorous investigation of, and engagement with continually evolving technologies. Our digital arts program encourages students to combine an understanding of the theoretical discourses of new media and visual arts with strong technical sophistication, a rich sense of visual design and an ability to articulately express themselves as artists.

3D Computer Animation

3D Computer Animation is an exploration of motion, time and texture within the third dimension. This course takes as its starting point a recognition that "3D Animation" is a loaded medium full of expectations, cliches and a historically commercialized past. Starting week 1, the class diverges from this acknowledged place and ventures into realms of abstraction, audio/visual play, alternative narrative, moving text and a subversion of many of the intended uses for this typically industry-based tool. Below is a scattershot representation of the work being made in this class.

For the final project, the members of the class decided to have an outdoor, site-specific show of their animation work at the Cascade Fountains location on the UO Campus. This space provided a unique set of advantages and challenges that forced students to think about yet another translation: 3D Model >> 2D Video >> (Real World) 3D Space. By all accounts, the show was a success. The above video highlights a couple projects at the show.
