Contemporary media practice involves a rigorous investigation of, and engagement with continually evolving technologies. Our digital arts program encourages students to combine an understanding of the theoretical discourses of new media and visual arts with strong technical sophistication, a rich sense of visual design and an ability to articulately express themselves as artists.

About Digital Imaging

3D Imaging is a course that explores the world of depth in screen-based visual artwork. This class entails an entire paradigm shift in the way students work...thinking in three dimensional space and learning new tools that offer a broad amount of control of form, light, texture and composition.

Student Support

(tutorials, video demonstrations, external resources, etc)

BLENDER Material

    Modeling a screwdriver from scratch.

Materials Tutorial   Understanding Materials, Sub-Materials and the qualitative changes you can make by changing shader values.

2D Cruve Tutorial   Learn to add, manipulate and control 2D curves in Blender. (5 minute video tutorial).

Spin Tutorial   Spin a 2D Curve to get a 3D shape. (5 minute video tutorial)

Bevel Object   How to use the BevOb and TapeOb curve functions. This allows you to string an outline shape along a path AND taper that shape. (5 minute video tutorial).

Array Modifier Tutorial   Learn the basics of the Array Modifier and particularly how to use the 'Object Offset' option which allows you to use an EMPTY as a reference in an array. (5 minute video tutorial).

Array Tutorial 2   Arrays part 2: troublshooting unexpected results and getting multidimensional arrays. (5 minute video tutorial).

Faster Rendering Tutorial   Speed up the rendering process for the testing/developing phase of a 3D scene.(5 minute video tutorial).

Alpha Channel Render Save Tutorial   How to save alpha channel information in a rendered image and use that data from photoshop to automatically separate a 3D render from its background. (5 minute video tutorial).

Mirror Modifier Tutorial   An essential modeling technique that allows one to model only HALF of a model and have the other half mirror in realtime. (HTML Tutorial).

Compositing Turorial (HTML)   How to Set Up a background image in a viewport, render a background image using 'BackBuff' and also how to fake an alpha channel shadow and composite it into a background image using 'OnlyShadow'. (HTML tutorial).

Unwrap Tutorial   Learning to unwrap a complex shape, in this case, a banana.

Lattice tutorial blender 3d   The Lattice Modifier demystified (in 5 minutes).

Alpha Texture video tutorial   Using the ALPHA channel information in an image to get a clear and seamless 2D texture in Blender. To allow ground plane to see alpha shadow, turn on 'TraShad' under SHADER panel for ground plane.

Camera Tutorial   Some of the more advanced camera features including Passepartout (shades out non rendered areas), Track to Empty (camera target), Fly Through mode.
