GK12 Learning About Where We Live

The National Science Foundation’s Graduate Teaching Fellows in K-12 Education (GK-12) Program connects universities with local schools. OIMB's GK-12 program brings a marine science curriculum to over 3000 kindergarten through sixth grade students who live along the southern Oregon coast. Our GK-12 graduate fellows, under the mentorship of classroom teachers, improve their teaching and communication skills and gain an understanding of the K-12 education system. The classroom teachers receive professional development in and out of the classroom, and gain experience with inquiry-rich science lessons; while the students benefit from hands-on science learning and interactions with university student role models. OIMB and the participating school districts gain from strengthened partnerships, and all gain from a greater appreciation of our coastal back yard.
