---------------------
The purpose of this Website is to help in the process of substantially improving PreK-12 Math Education. Three major "change agents" are explored from a math education point of view:
A number of my recent articles are available at http://iae-pedia.org/Main_Page#Math.
The following short book is now available free on my Website. It covers the three bulleted items above, and is intended for use in a math Methods course for preservice or inservice elementary school teachers.
Moursund, D.G. (June 2006). Computational Thinking and Math Maturity: Improving Math Education in K-8 Schools. Access at http://uoregon.edu/~moursund/Books/ElMath/ElMath.html.
Here is an earlier book that had the same goals.
Moursund, D.G. (2005). Improving Math Education in Elementary Schools: A Short Book for Teachers. Access at http://darkwing.uoregon.edu/~moursund/
Books/ElMath/ElMath.html.
Here is a related shorter document.
Moursund, D.G. (September 23, 2004). Increasing Student Math Expertise in the Information Age. This is aimed at teachers of teachers of mathematics. Click here to read a PDF of this 26 page (draft) of this article that is still a work in progress.
If you are new to this Website, it is recommended that you begin with What is Mathematics? and then continue with Major Unifying Themes in This Document. Readers who want to "cut to the chase" may then want to skip everything else and go directly to Recommendations.
This Website has been specifically designed to support a workshop, a short course, or self study.
As you browse this Website, you will see that it is extensive and contains many links to the work of others. From time to time, some of these links will become nonfunctional. Send me an email message about such difficulties and I will try to rectify them.
Please be aware that this Website is a work in progress and is changing significantly on a month by month basis. Direct questions and suggestions to the Website author, "Dr. Dave" Moursund. Some parts of this Website are merely notes to myself and very rough draft ideas.
Partial support for the initial development of this Website was provided by The Quiet Revolution, a Preparing Tomorrow's Teachers to use Technology project in the College of Education at the University of Oregon. The PTTT project was funded by the US Department of Education, grant # P342A00038.
The author of this Website is "Dr. Dave" Moursund, Emeritus Professor in Teacher Education at the University of Oregon.
I spend a lot of time reading academic materials. When I encounter an article that fits in with my math education intersts, I add it as a reference here.
Mathematics Education Network. Accessed 5/23/05: http://math.edreform.net/. Quoting from the Website:
The Mathematics Education Network is designed to help local schools to understand the issues, challenges and opportunities available for dramatically improving mathemtics instruction so that all students can learn. The portal is offered by a partnership of the Vermont Insitutes and the National Institute for Community Innovation.
