Star Wars:
The Magic of Myth
While visiting my son in Chicago in the fall of 2000, I was fortunate enough to tour the Smithsonian's traveling exhibit "Star Wars: The Magic of Myth" at the Chicago Field Museum. Although I was raised on classic Star Trek, the Star Wars trilogy of movies dominated my children's cinematic universe. Now, almost three decades later, the myth has been renewed for my grandson's generation. Where my son's Chrismtas list used to be filled with Tauntauns, AT-ATs, and Snowspeeders, I now receive wish lists from my grandson for Naboo fighters and Droids. He was delighted with my gift of the software program "Droidworks" because it let him use his own imagination to create a new creature for the Star Wars universe.
Admiral Ackbar was one of my son's favorite characters. This one's for you Ben!
My grandson, Thomas, favors R2D2. Many of his Droidworks creations features some aspect of R2D2 in their design.
I couldn't remember this bounty hunter's name but a quick check of the Smithsonian's website confirmed this is Klaatu. I wonder if that was Lucas' subtle salute to "The Day The Earth Stood Still" - Klaatu Barada Niktoo!
I'm must be a bit of an outlaw myself. I have a Tuscan Raider action figure displayed in my office collection of favorite science fiction characters.
Lucas slipped in a small nod to Star Trek too. Hans Solo found out what happens when someone unleashes the power of carbonite. It must be a by product of Captain Kirk's mythical corbomite!
