U-LEAD

A Certificate Program for Oregon Union Members!

Now Oregon union members can earn a certificate in union leadership from the Labor Education and Research Center through the U-LEAD Program.

It takes a lot karento be an effective union leader today! Knowing how to bargain a contract, how to enforce it, and how to run an efficient meeting is just a starting point.

Today's union leaders need an understanding of the changing economic, political and legal environment. They must also know how to:

  • Activate their members
  • Organize new work units
  • Engage members in the political process
  • Communicate well in different settings
  • Plan and carry out innovative strategies that best protect and represent their members

[Karen Thompson receives ULEAD Certificate]

The Labor Education and Research Center of the University of Oregon is offering a core curriculum that will enable workers and union members to earn a certificate in Union Leadership. The U-LEAD program was developed in conjunction with the LERC Labor Advisory Board.

U-LEAD offers courses in four areas (clusters) that correspond to critical elements of union leadership as well as a cluster of other related topics. The clusters include:

  • Contract Negotiations and Administration
  • Building the Union Organization
  • Individual Leadership Skills
  • Framework for Labor-Management Relations
  • Other Topics/Electives

Union members need 64 hours of training divided among these areas. The classes are available through LERC's Leadership Schools, multi-week formats, and in special union training programs and conferences. Please check out the Requirements section for specific course listings and credit hours information.

LERC's U-LEAD Leadership Schools and other training programs will be scheduled so that union leaders throughout the state can achieve a certificate in 2-4 years without having to travel great distances from their homes.

Previous courses offered by LERC and other union training may count toward completion of a U-LEAD certificate.

Classes taken for a U-LEAD certificate are not transferable as credits toward any degree program at the University of Oregon.

Participants will need to enroll in the U-LEAD program so that we can keep track of all courses taken and assist them as they complete the program.
