Re: diglib: October & November DCC Meetings
A little more information about the topic for the November 20th
meeting: Three digital library/MDLS discussion groups have met so far.
Participants in each group have talked about the need for a group which
would decide on directions the library should take, specific goals and
the priority of specific projects. They have all wondered out loud
about what role DCC plays in all this and whether the current makeup of
DCC is appropriate for making these decisions. Mark and I have also
talked about the need to define DCC and its role, and to decide if there
need to be two groups: one to define directions, goals and priorities
and another to work out the specific procedures and workflow for getting
things done. If yes, which one would DCC be and is the current
membership of DCC (based on recent attendance) appropriate for the level
of decisions the group is to make?
I expect these questions to keep coming up and that Library
Administration and Council will probably have some discussions. I
believe DCC itself should also discuss it and make recommendations (that
comes just from me, though; I don't know what Admin. thinks about it).

Upcoming DCC meetings:
October 16th:
So far, I have one agenda item for the October DCC meeting. Faye, Ed
and I would like to talk about Terms of Use statements for licensed
digital content hosted locally, such as Art on File and Saskia. The
proposed idea is to list full terms of use in ERM, and include a brief
statement in CONTENTdm Metadata linking to the full terms. This will
include a broader discussion regarding sharing access rights and
responsibilities to our users via ERM.
November 20th:
As per our discussion on Sept. 18, I had been planning on initiating a
discussion regarding DCC membership on the diglib list. However, I
now believe we need to take a step back and look more closely at the
group itself before making decisions about increasing the number of
full members or eliminating the group's current status as a voting body.
I think we need to have a broader discussion about the mission, role
and charge of this group; we need to address whether our primary role
is to facilitate digital library development or if we should continue
playing a more active role in policy development and prioritizing
digital projects as we did under Carol's charge.
If the latter is the case, we may want to consider having more
administrative / department head membership and possibly having a
Chair with a higher profile than myself.
Library Administration sees the need to better identify the roles and
responsibilities of the DCC and will likely want to contribute to this
broader discussion.
I think that any decision we may reach must be informed by the Digital
Library Services discussion groups currently being organized by
Library Administration, and that we should address the issue of the
DCC's role after these discussions are complete. I would like to have
this topic on the agenda for the November 20th meeting.
Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.
