Julian Buck's Homepage

Hello and welcome to my homepage! My name is Julian Buck. I am from Prince George, BC and am currently residing in Eugene, OR with my fiancé Grace Rogers, as I complete my final year of graduate school. On this website you will find information about my career and my interests.

Mathematics

I am currently in my sixth year as a graduate teaching fellow at the University of Oregon, where I teach lower-division undergraduate classes such as precalculus, calculus, and statistics. I plan to graduate in the spring of 2010. My PhD supervisor is N. Christopher Phillips.

My Curriculum Vitae

My research interests lie in functional analysis, specifically C*-algebras and their classification theory. I am especially interested in the connections between topological dynamics and C*-algebras, such as the structure of C*-algebras obtained as crossed products by minimal homeomorphisms. Other interests of mine include Z-stability, the Cuntz semigroup, and the comparison theory of positive elements in C*-algebras. See my research statement for an overview of my current work.

My Research Statement

    Some mathematical websites of interest:

Homepage of N. Christopher Phillips -The single best resource on the internet for C*-algebras info.
Hilbert - Sam Walters' Homepage - My undergraduate supervisor's website, a good C*-algebras page.
The arXiv - Most mathematics preprint articles end up being posted here, hopefully mine appear soon.

Climbing

I am an enthusiastic rock, ice, and alpine climber. I love being outside, in the mountains or at the crag, and moving in a vertical environment. I enjoy the physical and mental challenge of climbing, and the friendships and partnerships I have made participating in it. Photos of my climbing trips are available on Facebook - just add me as a friend. Here are some climbing-related links and websites hat I enjoy:

UO Outdoor Pursuits Program - Great classes, great teachers, and a great experience.
UO Outdoor Program - Fun outdoor trips and events with an awesome, friendly statff.
Alpinist - The best climbing magazine in the world and a great, info-packed website.
UK Climbing - Another information heavy website with tons of news and articles.
Mountain Equipment Co-Op - Awesome climbing gear and clothing at a great price.
Pimpin and Crimpin - The funniest, most outrageous climbing blog on the internet.
Dan and Janiece - Dan Crowe is my climbing mentor and an all-round awesome guy.
Jed Brown's Climbing Page - Jed Brown is one of the world's top young alpinists.
Mark Twight - Dr. Doom's no-holds-barred writing and attitude make him one of a kind.
