Open forum on equipping DPS officers with tasers

On January 29th (next Tuesday) in the law building room 175 at noon there will be an open forum to discuss the issue of equipping DPS with tasers. If you feel strongly about this or just want to get more information on what exactly this means for students then stop by and get involved.

Meeting This Thursday

Since the Emu was closed on Monday a meeting will be held Thursday at 4pm. If this doesn't work let us know, otherwise come with an article idea and/or suggestions for those still searching.

Stipend Positions

At the meeting next Monday at 4:00pm the open stipend positions will be "discussed". That is to say that we will be looking at those who are interested in the positions and possibly deciding on them. If you are interested in one of these positions it would be great if you could come to next week's meeting. If you cannot make it, then you should stop by the office (or contact us in some other way) to let us know you are interested.

New Monday meeting time/Thursday meetings

At last night's meeting it was decided to move the Monday meetings to 4:00pm. If you could not be there and you think this is a bad time, then you should contact us. There will be a Thursday meeting (at least this week) at 5:00pm to discuss a good time for a second weekly meeting (if there is going to be one).

Date error in 19.3 (Peter Young speech)

The recently released issue 19.3 is fresh off the press, but with an error. The Announcements section erroneously reports the date of Peter Young's presentation as "Thusday, December 8th @ 6pm". It should read "Thursday, December 6th @ 6pm". Sorry for any confusion and be sure to attend what is likely to be one of the hottest presentations in recent UO memory :)

The University of Oregon's Center for the Advancement of Sustainable Living (CASL) has aspirations for a speaker and workshop series about sustainability, leading up to Focus The Nation at the end of January. We would love your organization's partnership in making this a reality. Our goal is to make this a community oriented event, so we invite each club on this campus as well as many community organizations to use their individual area of expertise and interest to make this an inclusive series.]]>
The University of Oregon's Center for the Advancement of Sustainable Living (CASL) has aspirations for a speaker and workshop series about sustainability, leading up to Focus The Nation at the end of January. We would love your organization's partnership in making this a reality. Our goal is to make this a community oriented event, so we invite each club on this campus as well as many community organizations to use their individual area of expertise and interest to make this an inclusive series.

Our tentative title for this event is REDEFINE THE DREAM

Here's what we have planned so far:
The first three lectures and workshops will deal with the pragmatic aspects of sustainability: transportation, housing, and food.
1. The transportation set might focus on programs in mass transit or with alternative fuels sources.
2. With sustainable housing, we might have a presentation by a green builder, then tour a couple of "green" houses in the campus area.
3. Food week will be oriented around local and organic foods. (These ideas are open to further development. Please feel free to provide input.)

During the week of Focus the Nation (January 31), we will host:
4. A day of "Localization" through which motivate people to reduce their carbon footprint for a day, or even the whole week, by eating closer to home and using alternative transportation.
5. After Focus The Nation, we will have a last event dealing with action in the field of sustainability. Through a combination of lecture and workshop we aim to inspire tomorrow's leaders to show support for sustainability through the humanities, including art, photography, writing, protest, film, and activism.

This five-event "month" is our rough blueprint. This is what we need to do now:
Make it happen!

In order to do this, we want and need your participation. To embrace community involvement with this series, we are inviting organizations from each of these sectors to help in choosing the speaker for each lecture and activity for each workshop, along with all of the logistical concerns. Our kickoff planning session will be at 4:00 pm on Monday the 26th of November, located in the UO EMU in the Owyhee River Room. We hope the most enthusiastic people from your club/organization can attend! At this meeting, CASL will start things off by briefly outlining the structure of the series and then facilitators for each area of focus will lead up discussion on what speakers to invite, who in the community to get involved, what activities to do, etc. It's an open slate, but we're sure we can make this happen.

So what do you say? Is your organization interested? Do you have input/ideas? Can you sponsor a speaker?
Please respond in either case so we make sure every organization we contact actually has been contacted. And please let us know if you have any questions or comments.
