Bamboo Building Techniques
Bay area architect Darrel DeBoer is a longtime proponent of bamboo as a viable building material. The workshop will focus on the construction of a permanent bamboo structure. The format will provide an opportunity to gain an understanding of bamboo joinery and techniques of construction. Cob Construction
Get your hands dirty while learning how to work with cob. Over the course of the conference this workshop will produce a series of benches that will be integrated with the permanent bamboo structure. The Natural Step
The Natural Step is a practical communication and planning model for sustainability, based on scientific principles. It offers a framework for strategic planning, and can be used as a compass for navigating step-by-step towards long-term economic and ecological sustainability. This workshop will introduce the model and explore some of its applications in design, communities and business. Sun: NS1 10:30-12:00; NS2 1:00-2:30 Cost: $10

Bamboo Cultivation
Gib Cooper of Tradewinds Bamboo Nursery will explore the growing of bamboo as a building material. The workshop will include information on preferred species selection, cultivation, harvesting and curing, as well as bamboos varied uses locally and around the world. Sat: BC1 10:30-12:00; BC2 1:30-3:00 Cost: $10

Vital Signs
Participants will form a mini case study of a building by hands-on experience and investigations of various building performance topics. Activities will include developing a hypothesis and gathering physical data using the latest and greatest (cool tools) like an infrared temperature gun, anemometers, light meters, and sling psychrometers. You do not need previous experience, just an inquisitive mind. Sat: VS1 10:30-12:30; VS2 3:00-5:00 Cost: $10

Textile Printing
Learn a variety of techniques for making marks on fabric mediums. We will experiment with stamps, stencils, resists, and plexiglass prints. T-shirts for printing will be provided. Sat: TP1 10:30-12:00; TP2 1:00-2:30 Cost: $15

Alternative Paper Making
Learn how to craft your own paper using recycled materials and plant fibers collected from around campus. Sat: AP1 10:30-12:00; AP21:30-3:00 Cost: $10

Sun Trackers and Time Markers
Sunmarkers and sundials help connect us to the rhythms and cycles of the day and seasons, and can be used to mark and celebrate significant points in time. Learn about solar geometry and design a sundial or sunmarker using a variety of found and recycled items. Sun: SD1 10:30-12:00 Cost: $5

Hope Place Tiles - A Kids' Workshop
Exploring young childhood memories of favorite natural places that are hoped to still exist in years to come. Images and words will be glazed into tiles and incorporated into the cob benches (see above) as a permanent addition to the campus.
