It’s such a weird world. Celebrities everywhere, I wonder if the Baldwin thing is serious. I hope we see some action w/ that magical 60 dems in the senate now.

Sounds like an amazing visit. It would be great to see him at a College Dems meeting next year.

BTW, one of the “possibly related posts: (automatically generated)” is a link to a thingsaboutportlandthatsuck blog entry entitled “#58 Senator Jeff Merkley’s Eyebrows”. Funny, but if thats considered a fault of a city, there could be worse…

Mostly from the South, and mostly republicans. What is their argument when they hear the evidence? I don’t get it.

  5. Kim says:

I wish for once it isn’t about party on this thing. The left is spinning and the right is spinning on the advantage. I’ve called for my representatives agenda during the break, Chet Edwards (D-Tx). I’m opposed to the health care bill, Cap and Trade, bail outs, stimulus, etc. As a small business owner these all have or will if passed hurt me. We will if this bill passes be forced to lay off our two remaining employees. Why, it isn’t because we don’t want them to have health insurance we could not afford the penalty. Someone needs to think hard about this. I am not paid by the right or the left. I would like to see health care reform just not socialized medicine for the whole. I think there are some great ideas floating around that wouldn’t cost me a dime. Some may even allow me to then be able to afford health care for my family and employees. Right now it is only us we can afford and if the economy doesn’t show improvement soon in our sector we will be added to the millions who can’t afford health coverage.

  6. Jeff Scroggin says:

Honestly no public option = no reform. Single payer is where we need to go, and the public option is the compromise to get us there. I will remember this is there is no public option come the next election cycles. It’s not liberal to think we should join the rest of the civilized world in regards to health care.

  7. Jordan says:

Even though the extreme right is using tactics that are immature and unreasonable, they continue to use them because the Democrats are hopeless to defend themselves on it. Even though the Dems are the ones who are more dedicated in finding a healthcare solution, the Republican desire to postpone talks has been the winning technique so far. The debate has progressed from universal/single payer to consumer co-ops. Obama wants to work in a bi-partisan fashion, but that wouldn’t entitle conservatives to owe liberals anything. Does Obama think if he works with the right enough that they’ll support him in the future? His own party is in shambles.

“As well, some sort of tax on inheritance. Tax those who are blessed with privilege, not who earned their wealth. I consider this view to be consistent with the Democratic view of equality of opportunity, and why I consider myself a Democrat.”

Well, I’ve accepted you despite our pretty radical differences, and this is just icing on the cake. I’m glad you’re on our side.

I agree with you on many things. One area where I don’t agree is that the democratic party is for equal opportunity. A major difference in the two parties is how they approach inequality. Republicans do not evade the situation, but rather they believe that equal opportunity should exists and therefor the better employee is always hired reguardless of attributes such as race, gender, religioius views, etc. that aren’t relevant to the job. The democrats believe in income redistribution which you denouced so valiently and I know that must be hard growing up in Oregon. Also the democrats believe in quotas for how many employees are of different races. Most hard left wingers you will notice believe that it should be equal in races. 2 blacks 2 whites 2 women 2 latinos, etc. Also the all black colleges, all black scholarship programs, etc. are supported by democrats. Conservatives believe that the most qualified for the position should be chosen reguardless of other inpertinent factors. That way the company or whatever is employeeing will run the most efficiently and productively. In other words conservatives don’t believe that we should sacrifice hard workers who are the most qualified prospects an opportunity at a job just because they are not a certain race, or there are too many whites, blacks, etc on the staff. In truth I see the democrats as being more racists than conservatives. It’s not that I believe Democrats are anti any particular race outside of white males (inside joke). I guess the best way I can put it is that I grew up in Port Arthur, TX. The city’s African American population is the majority by a wide margin. Being the white male that I am and a majority of my friends being African American didn’t like it when people treated them better or worse for being black. Rather they didn’t want people to have any preconvieved judgements because of there race. They didn’t want to be above or below the standard. In other words it was racist to consider race at all. I believe that conservatives look beyond race instead of trying to personally handpick different races like the kid who pours his skittles on the table and groups the different colors together. The only problem is that there are different numbers of every color. Therefor many of the surplus must be discarded in order to be equal. But I see a difference in what Republicanism has become and Conservatism. I am a CFP (Certified Financial Planner) at New York Life and work in the proud Houston, TX area. Your thoughts and beliefs on politics are identical to mine except for our perception of the two different parties. I would consider myself a moderate conservative whom is very conservative in his economic and political beliefs, but whom is liberal in his social beliefs outside of abortion. The Right to life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness. Got to heir on the side of life and in most instances outside of rape or some other extremity I am against abortion. Another thing about your proposal of a higher death tax and other forms of inheritance is that you should look into the flat tax. I know a lot of people try to ride this idea off, but it has thoroughly been studied as late as 1996. And could be very effective. With only a higher consumption tax it would be a form of progressive tax on the richer in itself. Also illegal immigrants, drug dealers, etc. that normally don’t pay an income tax would be taxed the same as everyone else. Texas is very conservative. If you watch how it is being managed, how little has changed despite the economic collapse, you wil in turn see a better run economy. Also you will be hard pressed to find anybody under the age of 25 whom does not currently reside in a town with under 1000 people and over 200 miles away from a majory city that is racist here. Against much of Americas pre concieved notions.
