Motor Pool Replaced

There was a great article on the Daily Emerald about the motor pool few days ago. Thought I should share it with you, so here it is.

The University’s system that doled out vehicles on a rental basis to student groups and club sports teams, known as the “motor pool,” closed its doors in the spring, leaving a void that is now being filled by Oregon State University’s motor pool.

The ASUO Motor Pool service provider changed this year after state budget cuts, and Oregon State University is now providing the same service for those seeking to borrow a vehicle.

The motor pool system allows student groups, departments on campus and club sports to borrow vehicles for retreats, conferences, tournaments and other events.

“It doesn’t matter what color you wear; we can compete in football, but we don’t have to compete over cars,” said OSU motor pool manager Justin Fleming.

Discussion of the partnership has been going on since the spring, when the University heard of the motor pool’s possible closure and began exploring different options to meet students’ needs.

What does this mean to regular club members?

Although we are putting greater emphasis on the team members, we made no deliberate attempt to harm the privileges of the regular members. As a regular member you are simply barred from team benefits that we stated before. You are still more than welcome to use used birdies (which are still in adequate condition), participate in casual practices, and have fun!

Why we are focusing on the team?

Our ultimate goals as a club is to promote badminton as a sport and create a welcoming environment for anyone wants to play badminton. Right now, we simply lack resources to pursue both the casual and competitive aspects of the sport. Unfortunately, this means the club has to prioritize its goals and focus our resources on things that are most important to us.

We would like to hear your thoughts and suggestions. Feel free to contact us at anytime.

There are always good number of beginner, intermediate, and advanced players and I encourage everyone to sign up (not to mention the close proximity to Eugene and low entry fee!). OSU Tournament is a perfect opportunity to have fun and gain some experience. I hope to see you all at the OSU Tournament. :)

Don’t forget! The deadline for the entry form is Tuesday, Nov. 3rd.

Done Deed

Warning

p.s. I am not sure if I’m using the expression ‘done deed’ correctly… :???:

Open House

Some pictures from the Club Sports Open House! My camera was low on battery so I wasn’t able to take many photos. Here are four that are pretty decent.

I would like to thank Yiwen and Jessica for making an awesome poster for this event! Also, I would like to thank Sandy and Phil for coming down and helping us at the booth!

New Mailing List

We are making couple of changes to our electronic mailing list. Following changes will be implemented on September 29th.

  1. The current mailing list will be purged. We believe our old mailing list contains too many inactive members. We have considered other options, such as maintaining the old list, but with less than 25% of the members in our list active, we decided that our best option is to start a new list (we currently have +200 addresses in our list and we figured only 30 to 40 people were “active”).
  2. A new mailing list will be started for 2009 and 2010 school year. The new mailing list will be generated mainly through the MEMBERSHIP/WAIVER FORM. Alternative method of submitting email address will be available for people who are not a member but wishes to be on the mailing list.
  3. All announcements made via the mailing list will also be posted here in our blog. Therefore, a member does not necessarily have to be on the mailing list as long as he or she checks the blog regularly or subscribes to the the blog’s RSS feed.

If you have questions regarding our mailing list change, please send us an email. Our email address can be found on the contact page.

Google Talk

Chat Bubble

If you visit our Contact page you will notice a new Google Talk function. We have added Google Talk in hopes to make us more accessible to the club members.

For now, I (Michael) will be handling all conversations related to Google Talk, since most of the club executives are out of town. However, once the school starts I might not always be the person on the other end of the conversation.

And on a side note, my current instant messaging client, Pidgin, is pretty bad when it comes to notifications. I will make an effort to be extra vigilant, but please understand that I might not respond to your messages right away even though my status is set to ‘available’.

If you have a question or suggestion, feel free to send us an email or start a conversation!

Fall Term Schedule

Hey Folks,

Hope y’all are well rested and ready for a exciting new term! Yay!

Well, I think that is enough for the greetings. Let’s move on. Our fall term practice schedule has been set to Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4:00pm to 6:15pm, at the Gerlinger Annex B54. We will adjust to fall term schedule on the first day of school, which is Tuesday, September 29th (for those who don’t know, we don’t have school on Monday).

Oh and just a reminder, we still have summer practices! Student Recreation Center was closed form August 17th to 28th for its annual maintenance, but it has now reopened and our summer schedule is back to normal.

Now, a really old news that I should have announced weeks ago: There has been yet another complaint from the REC Center regarding our closing time. REC Center closes at 8pm during summmer/fall intermission. And understandably the staff would like to go home exactly at 8p.m. So let’s be nice and try to git-r-done by 8pm.

I think this is all for now. We will probably make another announcement just before the beginning of the school for some minor things that are still being straightened out.

Well, until then see you guys/gals later!
