The summer field camp is a six-week intensive course taught in central Oregon and southwestern Montana. Students learn to describe and identify rocks in the field, map geologic structures and geomorphic features, and interpret an area’s geologic history using their own data. Methods include use of topographic maps and air photos, plane table and alidade, electronic total stations, and GPS units. Projects will include mapping Holocene volcanoes and faults in central Oregon, detailed surveying of lake shorelines and fault scarps, and mapping in deformed sedimentary and igneous rocks in Montana. We take several excursions during the course to see classic examples of volcanism, sedimentology, neotectonics, and structure in the surrounding regions.
Schedule and Instructors for Summer 2009:
Preliminary Schedule for the whole course.
June 15 to July 2: Ray Weldon - Active geologic processes, central Oregon
July 3 to 12: Becky Dorsey - Bedrock mapping and stratigraphy, SW Montana
July 13 to 26: Marli Miller - Advanced mapping and structural geology, SW Montana
(follow the links above for more information about field projects)
The course will start with an organizational meeting at 9:00 a.m. Monday June 15. At the end of the course, the group will drive back to Eugene on July 25. Here is the class of summer, 2007. Check out this Slide Show by Marli Miller.
We will be camping in central Oregon for the first half of the course, and then we'll move to Dillon, Montana, where we will stay in dorms at the University of Montana Western. The table below shows our best estimate of tuition and fees for in-state and out-of-state students for summer 2009.
| ANTICIPATED COSTS | Oregon Students | Out-of-State |
|---|---|---|
| Tuition (10 cr.) | $1,427 | $1,890 |
| Course fee | $1,700 | $1,700 |
| Total | $3,127 | $3,590 |
Note: These are estimates and could change, check back for updates.
In addition, students who wish to stay in campus dorms while at the University of Oregon (June 14, 15 and July 25) will need to pay an extra approximately $150 to cover that cost. If you want to stay in a UO dorm, please contact us before April 15. Other costs will include lunch food while in Dillon, and dinner or lunch expenses for one or two nights while on the road. Students will also want to bring personal spending money.
